Channel 4 has created Comedy Blaps to act as an online launch pad for emerging comedy writers, directors, performers and animators.
The site is a great stepping stone, allowing comedy stars of the future to be nurtured and it gives up-and-coming talent a chance to dip their toe in the water before making the leap to TV.
C4 put a call out in March 2011 for ideas and received more than 500 pitches! They were distilled down to the very best and now the first four mini-series' are ready for the world's viewing pleasure
Channel 4 wanted to create a website that would get users watching new comedy - which can be a big ask. They ultimately wanted a video player that was beautiful and easy to use, allowing users to watch and explore. The site needed to excite users and encourage them to watch more shorts and share with their friends.
Numiko created an exciting and intuitive site, making video the dominant focus. Users have the opportunity to explore other videos, watching short previews and enabling them to engage in the content further. The site uses Facebook, Google+ and Twitter, letting users share their favourite videos with friends and comment on what they see.
“New comedy can be a hard sell for audiences, so I wanted a site that was playful and an absolute joy to use, so users feel compelled to discover more videos. It was also important to create a TV-like experience, with full-screen video that would really showcase the content.”
Jody Smith, Multiplatform Commissioning Editor - Channel 4.
