The successful bid for UNESCO World Heritage Site (WHS) status places Cornwall and West Devon's historic mining landscapes on a par with such international treasures as Stonehenge, the Taj Mahal and the Great Wall of China.
Cornwall Council asked Numiko to build a content manageable website, with the aims of increasing knowledge and awareness of Cornish mining, and the huge impact it had on the UK and the World, and to turn website visitors – local, national and international - into physical visitors to the World Heritage Site.
We started with our ‘discovery’ phase by combining existing Cornwall Council research, with our knowledge and expertise to define the site structure, design and the content strategy. The historic content was developed in layers to appeal to people with all different levels of interest.
To encourage website visitors to plan their visit to the world heritage site, we’ve used ‘Go & see it’ persuasive promotional cues in key places throughout the website, and made it easy for users to add the heritage site’s attractions and activities to their own personal ‘brochure’, which can easily be shared with friends and printed out.
In the first week alone, with almost no promotion, the site received nearly 2,000 unique visitors, with visitors averaging more than 6 pages per visit, and spending 7 minutes on the website.
Search engines easily picked up the website and the content; accounting for nearly half of all traffic.
Numiko have proven to be a real asset as a partner in this project. Their insight derived from similar projects and genuine engagement with our offer from the outset, has prompted us to refine and hone our approach throughout. Numiko have undoubtedly helped us deliver what we believe should be a highly engaging and informative website that will aid users to plan a visit and 'Discover the Extraordinary' impact Cornish Mining has had both here and around the world.
David Rutherford, Principal Officer, Cornish Mining World Heritage Site.
The New Media Age have given the site we built for Cornish Mining a bit fat 92/100, which is the highest score editor Will Cooper has ever given to a website in the NMA’s ‘Site Inspection’ feature.
Quoting Will from the article, he said “The Cornish and West Devon communities are justifiably proud of the area being designated a World Heritage Site for its mining past. They should also be proud of its supporting website, which is one of the finest examples of web design and content I’ve seen in a while.”
“Overall, it’s a fantastic, almost-flawless example of a site that takes what could be seen by many as a hard, heavy subject and makes it vibrant and, crucially, relevant. A must visit.”
