Introduction

The NSPCC is a charity with a vision to end cruelty to children in the UK.  The charity operate ChildLine, which is the UK’s free, confidential helpline for children and young people. This service was due to be updated across online communications channels on ChildLine.org.uk and SMS.

Brief

Numiko were tasked with creating a bespoke suite of 'Creative tools' for ChildLine.org.uk to help young people communicate incredibly emotional experiences when talking online with counsellors.  Numiko were also asked to bring their experience of real-time Flash Applications to help provide a secure platform for these communications to take place.

Solution

We set about designing the chat tool around the style of Yahoo IM and MSN Messenger. As most children are familiar with these tools, we wanted to give them confidence and so studied the common functions and interface conventions that these tools employ.

The rest of the creative tools were also built by Numiko, with the drawing tool and fridge magnet poetry tool needing to be available to the child in private as well as in a real time one-to-one session with a counsellor.

In addition to the design and usability of these tools, we integrated with a complex backend system that managed the communications routing and ensuring high levels of security and resilience.

Testimonial

"We knew that to be relevant to children, we have to be doing amazing things online. These really valuable services which children actually enjoy using will allow ChildLine to get to the heart of the problems of even more young people."

Ian MacArthur, Creative Director & Head of Brand Marketing - NSPCC
