Gone are the days of gathering around the wireless - the internet is a rapidly growing channel for radio listening. More and more people not only use the web to tune in, but to also access a wealth of music related information from schedules to playlists, learning about composers and catching up on concert broadcasts.
Based on our design expertise and understanding of users' habits, the BBC tasked us with improving the online experience for Radio 3 listeners - helping them to access live radio streams and dive deep into a rich archive of audio and video content, including performances and special interest content.
Users found the old site busy, confusing and failing to draw attention to some of the most important content and features.
Using our User Centred Design methodology, we restructured each 'genre homepage' into a simple, three column design, giving the three different user groups a much better route in. This allows the casual listener, the music expert and the Radio 3 devotee, the opportunity to just dip their toe in or enjoy the full experience!
The slick new site also makes life easier for BBC editors, giving them 24/7 control over the content and live music feeds, keeping it fresh and giving people a reason to keep coming back.
