Introduction

Channel 4's Street Summer explores the influences that have shaped contemporary urban culture.  A showcase for talented Brits, this season of multiplatform commissions explores street culture and its presence in many peoples' lives, from dance, urban sport and street art, to graffiti, rap/spoken word and hip hop.

Brief

Numiko teamed up with Fresh One to create the world’s first online Rap Beatbox Choir and the Street Summer homepage for channel4.com, which showcases the programmes and other activities that make up the season.

The YouTube app features amazing talent in the form of Akala, Beardyman, PGR, Ms. Dynamite, Wretch 32 and Lady Leshurr.  It encourages members of the public to come together and add their voices in the form of rapping, singing and beatboxing to a unique piece of music composed especially for this project called 'We are the People'.

People chosen from the auditions will appear in a final film to be broadcast on C4, bringing together the world's biggest virtual Rap Beatbox Choir.

Solution

Numiko’s experience with complex Flash app builds and multiplatform integration was key to this project. The app we created to sit on the Street Summer YouTube channel, enables users to play with the 13 part track made up of separate YouTube videos.

The users needed to be able to understand the breakdown of the track, whilst also being given the challenge to learn and record their own video for different parts of the track, in the most user-friendly way.

Results

The YouTube channel and app have received thousands of views since launch.  The closing date for entries is 12 September 2011.

Testimonial

“This is an innovative cross-platform commission and one that has really struck a chord with our audience.  The Rap Beatbox Choir shows how multiplatform commissions can complement and enhance a broadcast season of programmes.  Where the programmes shine a light on established talent, online we've provided a platform for the next generation of artists to show us what they can do.”

Kate Quilton, Multiplatform Commissioner - C4.
