Introduction

The UK has an outstanding national art collection of 200,000 oil paintings, though it’s unlikely you’ve seen the vast majority of them - even though the public own these paintings, 80% of them aren't on display.  These hidden masterpieces can be found tucked away in storage or in buildings the public can't access like fire stations, hospitals and schools across the country.

Brief

The BBC commissioned Numiko to develop the ground-breaking Your Paintings website to bring together all of the artworks, the stories behind them and where to go to see them.  The site gives the public access to an incredibly rich treasure trove of paintings.

Solution

Your Paintings involved two separate commissions and months and months of UX design and development work to create a sector defining website for browsing and discovering paintings. The first part consisted of a closed BETA site and the second part was the build of a scalable website based on the existing prototype.  The result is a site dedicated to the display of the UK’s national painting collection that is world class in its design, functionality and usability.

Results

It’s not often you find a website you’ve launched being trailed on BBC1 just prior to the 10 o'clock news and featured on the homepage of bbc.co.uk, so we’re really proud that the site has functioned flawlessly under extremely high load and traffic spikes, testament to the quality of the technical architecture and build.

Awards

Judged by fifty of the leading practitioners in digital, the site we built for BBC Your Paintings was chosen as the WINNER of the Arts & Culture category of the BIMA Awards.

We are extremely proud of this site and feel honoured to be a part of such a great project, which puts thousands of unseen paintings online for the benefit of the nation!
