Bournemouth University relied on a number of disparate, unconnected solutions to manage its digital communications and interactions - we provided the back end build to bring these together.

Bournemouth University (BU) recognises the importance of digital channels in growing its position as a leading and contemporary international university and delivering a new world-class experience that will inspire the next generation of students. The first step in BU’s digital vision was to revisit the digital offering to prospective students and external audiences, with a focus on ensuring the current website was migrated onto a platform with the ability to deliver enhanced digital functionality way into the future.

To achieve this BU required an experienced external partner to work alongside their internal team, providing expertise and support to complete their vision for the new website, providing technical assistance, coding of Drupal, set up, and recommendations for a high availability hosting platform.

At point of contract, the UX and design of the site had already been completed, and the decision had been made to build the site using the Drupal CMS framework.

After a competitive tender process, Numiko were selected based on our Drupal capabilities as well as our experience of working with Higher Education institutions, and implementing websites that could withstand large amounts of traffic. The first phase release had to be live within a very short turnaround time of less than 3 months, so our experience of non-negotiable launch deadlines from working with the BBC and Channel 4 ensured the project kept moving forward.

The initial contract was to cover a 'phase 1' relaunch of the website. This covered the underlying Drupal set up, inlcuding:

  • User Management
  • Single sign-on (SSO)
  • Multi-site management
  • Multi-lingual content
  • WYSIWYG editing
  • Publishing content
  • Personalised content
  • User-generated content
  • Social media management
  • Workflow management
  • Site search
  • Media library
  • Form builder
  • Mobile compatibility
  • Screen breakpoints
  • Touch support
  • Setup of staging and production environments
  • Google Analytics management
  • Security auditing

First phase migration has been completed, meeting the aggressive deadlines set, including corporate information about the University, and landing pages for key sections of the site which signpost visitors to older microsites.

During this long term partnership Numiko continues to provide support during the migration of legacy systems into Drupal, and the development of reusable modules and enhanced functionality that can be re-used in the future.
