Lloyd's Register Foundation

Transforming the digital strategy and technical infrastructure of a global safety charity

Lloyd's Register Foundation is a global safety charity that uses research, technological development, education, and outreach to help solve the world's biggest safety challenges. The Foundation has global impact drawing upon evidence and insight to build coalitions for change.

Challenge

In order to support their vitally important work, and to stay up-to-date with modern communication techniques, Lloyd's Register Foundation needed to embark on a major digital transformation project. As part of this work, the foundation wanted to:

  • Create a clear content strategy for their digital transformation
  • Define an efficient, consolidated and modern technical infrastructure
  • Consolidate their content offering around defined audience segments
  • Develop a deep understanding of their existing and potential audiences, and use these insights to increase their reach to a more diverse global audience online through SEO, PPC and thought leadership.
  • Develop a new digital brand experience and improve user experience and engagement.

Approach

We collaborated with Lloyd's Register Foundation on a digital transformation project to radically overhaul their digital estate, providing them with a platform capable of supporting their aim of being the leading global safety forum.

To facilitate this, we began by analysing every area of the Foundation, evaluating the potential impact of digital technologies. Our aim was to reimagine and iteratively improve their technological systems. We identified digital platforms to support engaging and impactful storytelling, bringing the impact of their work to life.

To identify the Foundation's key user groups, we employed surveys and interviews. This research allowed us to understand user motivations, goals, and levels of satisfaction. We then produced a detailed analytics report to understand how users discovered and moved through the Foundation’s digital estate. Using these insights, we developed detailed user journey maps to inform an overhaul of the website's information architecture and site infrastructure.

We completed a heuristic peer review to identify how the Foundation's vision, mission, objectives, and tactics compared to its peers. We established a set of user experience principles and produced a creative brief to identify digital design patterns and brand guidelines.

A key focus of this work was also to upskill the Foundation's staff, empowering them to confidently make the most of these new digital technologies, tools and services.

We look forward to the implementation phase of the Digital Transformation Project which will revolutionise the work of the Foundation for many years to come.
