Our new commitment to environmental responsibility.
We’re now a 1% for the Planet member. Which means we’re committing 1% of our annual revenue to environmental causes. No fluff just verified action.
The problem
An uncomfortable truth we need to sit with: Our industry has a growing environmental problem.
Every website we build, every video we embed, every email we send – they all demand energy. In 2026, the global electricity demand from data centres is expected to exceed that of Japan’s annual electricity consumption.
The irony isn’t lost on us. While we can’t fix that contradiction overnight, we can be honest about it, and fund organisations that are making a tangible difference.
1% for the Planet
As a mission-driven organisation, we’ve always cared about doing our bit for the environment. But caring isn’t enough anymore. The climate crisis is shaping everything around us, and if we’re serious about building great digital for good, we need to put our money where our values are.
That’s what 1% for the Planet is about. It’s a simple idea: businesses use the planet’s resources, so they have a responsibility to give back. Members commit 1% of their annual revenue to environmental causes of their choice. The certification is rigorous, which means when you see their logo, you know it represents real commitment, not greenwashing.
Who we're supporting
We will be splitting this quarter’s contribution evenly between FareShare Yorkshire and Leeds Wood Recycling – local organisations doing great work right here in Yorkshire.
FareShare Yorkshire redistributes surplus food from big companies to vital frontline organisations like hospices, refugees, and food aid centres. Each week they feed 44,000 people and prevent 4,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions yearly. They’re tackling two problems at once: food waste and food insecurity.
Leeds Wood Recycling gives waste wood a new life. In 2024 alone, they saved 412 tonnes of carbon dioxide and since their launch in 2018, have collected over 43,966 cubic yards of wood that would otherwise have been incinerated or dumped in landfill – the equivalent of nearly 14 Olympic swimming pools. They also provide training and employment opportunities to help people build green skills and reduce social isolation.
These two charities are the first of many. Every quarter we’ll be picking more to donate to, to meet our commitment of donating 1% of our revenue, which will amount to approximately £40,000 in donations.
This is just part of what building digital for good looks like in practice. Not just choosing the right clients or designing accessible websites – though we'll keep doing that too – it means funding work that makes things better.
Our 1% for the Planet membership is just the tip of the iceberg. If you want to know more about how we're tackling our own environmental impact, next month we'll be publishing our carbon reduction plan.
